Scanlines, are simple lines, which can be used as part of the background to make your graphic look quite neat. They?re not very hard to make and implement into your graphic.
There are three types of Scanlines: Vertical, Horizontal, and Diagonal.
Vertical Scanlines
- To make Vertical Scanlines, make a new file, with the dimensions of 3 pixels high, and 2 pixels wide.
- Zoom in 1600x

- Get out the Pencil Tool, with the 1 pixel sized brush. Draw a straight line down (in black) on the right side of the image. Then, fill in the remaining space with white.

- Then, use the magic eraser tool, set at 70% opacity, on the white.

- Afterwards, Go Edit » Define Pattern. Call the Pattern whatever you want.
- Then, go to the image, and select the layer you want to add the scanlines to.
- Select the Fill Bucket Tool, and up the top, choose Pattern instead of Foreground.

- Select the pattern we just made from the drop down menu.
- Fill! And your scanlines should be in place.
- Feel Free to change the opacity of the scanline?s layter to make the scanlines blend in more.
Horizontal Scanlines
- To make Horizontal Scanlines, open a new file, with a width of 3 pixels, and a height of 2 pixels
- Then, Zoom to 1600%

- Now, select the pencil tool, and set the brush to 1px diameter. Then, draw a straight horizontal line at the bottom of the image. Change the colour to white, and fill in the rest

- Then, use the magic eraser tool, set at 70% opacity, on the white.

- Afterwards, Go Edit » Define Pattern. Call the Pattern whatever you want.
- Then, go to the image, and select the layer you want to add the scanlines to.
- Select the Fill Bucket Tool, and up the top, choose Pattern instead of Foreground.
- Select the pattern we just made from the drop down menu.
- Fill! And your scanlines should be in place.
- Feel Free to change the opacity of the scanline?s layter to make the scanlines blend in more.
Diagonal Scanlines
- To make Diagonal Scanlines, open a new file, with a width of 3 pixels, and a height of 3 pixels.
- Zoom to 1600%

- Select the pencial tool, and then in black, draw a diagonal line from the top right corner, to the bottom left corner. NOTE: If you want
the scanlines to go in the opposite direciton, simply draw the line from the top left corner, to the bottom right corner. Then, whichever way you drew the line, fill in the rest of the image with white.

- Then, click on the white with your Magic Eraser tool set at 70% opacity

- Afterwards, Go Edit » Define Pattern. Call the Pattern whatever you want.
- Then, go to the image, and select the layer you want to add the scanlines to.
- Select the Fill Bucket Tool, and up the top, choose Pattern instead of Foreground.
- Select the pattern we just made from the drop down menu.
- Fill! And your scanlines should be in place.
- Feel Free to change the opacity of the scanline?s layter to make the scanlines blend in more.
